Jacques Duquesne is a Frenchman, by nationality, although he grew up in a French-occupied city in the Asiatic City-States. He became involved in a revolution as he grew up, becoming skilled in swordplay along the way. After learning that the revolution's leader had lied to him, Jacques left for New England. He wound up joining a traveling carnival there.
It was there that he met Clint. The boy made an impression on him with his work ethic, and Jacques took him under his wing. However, they parted on truly bad terms, after Jacques cut a tightrope out from under him and broke both Clint's legs.
Jacques taught Clint swordplay and knife-throwing, and is one of the most skilled men in those respects in the world.
He has a harsh temper and is a hardened criminal. The fight that left Clint with broken limbs was over his embezzlement from the carnival they were working in at the time.
Buck Chisholm was another man working at the traveling carnival Clint found himself a part of as a youth. The archer known as Trick Shot was approached by Jacques to teach Clint the skill in order to spice up their act.
Clint and Buck were reunited after he parted ways with Jacques, and it was then that Buck pulled Clint into his own criminal schemes, which also ended their relationship when Clint wound up injuring his brother on one of Buck's jobs.
Buck is a skilled archer, and taught Clint the basics, although Clint has long since surpassed those skills. Also a hardened man, Buck was never what one would call 'kind' to Clint, but he was kinder than Jacques had been near the end of Clint's associations with him.
Once they parted ways, Clint was glad to be rid of him, although he owes his entire livelihood to what Buck taught him.
A few years older than his brother Clint, Charles Bernard "Barney" Barton saw himself as Clint's protector when they were young, often attempting to shield him from the worst of their father's temper.
It was Barney's idea to run away from the orphanage and join the carnival, and Clint followed gladly. However once there, Barney found himself in his brother's shadow and a resentment started to grow, eventually coming to a head in an argument that led him to leave his injured brother behind him.
Barney joined the military briefly before moving to a federal agency, for whom he was undercover when Clint accidentally injured him while on a job with Buck.
After that, Barney sunk into his undercover work, eventually dropping the feds altogether in favor of that world instead. Clint lost track of him somewhere along the way, and as he's still rather angry about the way they originally parted ways, he hasn't thought much on that in recent years, though he loves his brother.
