[PTabbedContent][PTab=GENERAL INFORMATION] CHARACTER INFO: NAME: James Buchanan Barnes ALIAS: AGE: In his 90's, looks early 30's OCCUPATION: Assassin MEMBER GROUP: Superhuman Villain AFFILIATIONS: Superhuman Villain POWERS AND ABILITIES: Experiments from The Red Room gave Bucky a solution of super serum similar to that of Captain America, and later The Black Widow. The serum grants him the same advantages, namely: Strength - Bucky's strength is of near or equal that of Steve Rogers. Durability - Bucky is capable of fighting for longer periods of time, and taking more hits than the average human. Stamina - Fatigue does not affect Bucky as quickly or last as long. He could run a 40mile and come out the other end with very little difficulty. Speed- Enhanced above normal human speeds, Bucky is able to run between 40-70 kms Reflexes - Not as great as those of his arm by itself, still impressive when compared to a baseline human. Healing - Again, not as great as that of a mutant with the ability, Bucky is still granted with an increased lifespan, as well as healing roughly twice the speed of baseline humans. It does also mean that Bucky can't get drunk as easily, but also means that he also can't get poisoned as easily either. Thanks to Russian scientists and the R&D team from HYDRA, Bucky was fitted with a bionic arm, containing the following attributes. Superhuman strength: Some degree of extrahuman strength is granted to Bucky with the arm, capable of lifting, by arm alone, at least 4 times his own body weight. Enhanced reaction time: The arms reaction time is advanced to a point that is just shy of most superhumans with the same ability. He can catch an arrow fired at him without much trouble. Stabilization sensors: Bucky can detect the balance of objects and throw them with deadly accuracy. This is especially helpful when he has possession of Captain America's shield, or knives. Sensory array: There are sensors built into the arm that allow James to pass through metal detectors, and also shield any other metallic object on his person. Electrical discharge: Similar to Iron Man's repulsor beams, James can engage short, forceful electrical discharges from the bionic arm's palm. EMP: James can dispatch short range EMP blasts from the arm, disabling most technologies nearby (usually a 15 foot radius). Extended reach: When detached from his body, James still has the ability to control the arm due to implants in his brain. It has also been known to be programmed to perform actions on it's own when removed. Abilities given to Bucky over his years of training with both the US military and via HYDRA, The Red Room, and other organizations were given to make him the greatest assassin of his time. Even before HYDRA, James was an exceptionally skilled marksman and unarmed combatant. Later, his proficiency with knives increased and he was more valuable as a close-combatant. James is an Olympic level acrobat, and a skilled hunter and tracker. His abilities with espionage rivals those of the likes of The Black Widow Before the war, James was learning to speak French, but now counts his fluency in English, Russian, German and Japanese. Conversationally he can speak a handful more. PLAYBY: Sebastian Stan OOC INFO: PLAYER NAME: Jeoff AGE: Not 90 GENDER: Male TIMEZONE: +10 GMT (Sydney) OTHER CHARACTERS: Nei [/PTab][PTab=PERSONNEL ASSESSMENT] PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT: LIKES: Steve Rogers: Bucky's best friend. Bucky remembers Steve in flashbacks, mostly, and there's something about him that Bucky just finds comforting. Burgers: Bucky has never gotten over his love of an All-American burger. Music: There is little more refreshing than sitting back and listening to some old swing, jazz, or blues. They make Bucky feel like more than just a murderer. Exercising: This one Bucky likes for two reasons, being healthy is an important part of his job, and the mere act of working out clears his mind. There's nothing there but Bucky and the bar. Silence: Of course, when he wants it, Bucky likes the silence. There is a multitude of reasons, but it's mostly that no-one is giving him orders. DISLIKES: HYDRA: For all they did to him, and all they took from him. Though he would never show it in front of them. Failing a mission: If not for the fact that he hates failure, but he also fears the reprimand when he gets back. Lying: If and when Bucky finds out that someone has lied to him, he will not be forgiving. Being an assassin: When he's in his right mind, Bucky will probably need a lot of therapy to combat the feelings of guilt for having killed so many people. STRENGTHS: Chest and biceps, probably. His obvious strength is the metal arm grafted to body. Capable of crushing skulls without much resistance. James is also an exceptionally skilled fighter, both armed and unarmed. His loyalty, to a few people, is unwavering. WEAKNESSES: HYDRA's brainwashing has left James' memories looking something like swiss cheese. He remembers nothing of his past, before HYDRA, bar flashes of memories that get ripped away from him if he mentions them. James is not a technically proficient person, and needs help with the mechanical arm should it ever start to wear. There's also the big case of PTSD. Fireworks, cross country starting guns, anything war-ish, does not act favourably to him. GOALS: Bucky just wants to be his own person again, find his best friend Steve, and maybe settle down with a nice girl and start a family. He, unfortunately, knows that this will not happen, so he would settle for simply having his best friend back in his life and being free of HYDRA. FEARS: Always being a slave to HYDRA OVERALL PERSONALITY: Bucky, before the war, was a friendly, sociable, loving, loyal, free kind of person. He could walk into a room and make anyone feel comfortable. James Barnes had presence and he knew it, however, he was also a very protective person. James didn't like to see anyone hurt or hurting and was a good listener when someone needed it. Very much the quintessential 'big brother'. James felt it was his duty to make sure those closest to him were happy. His ideals remained during the war, the Nazi's were the enemy, and they deserved to be killed. They hurt people, and that was not okay with the young Barnes; and then the war ended. After repeated torture, near-starvation, thirst, more torture, and the constant brain-washing and cryostasis, Bucky's personality was changed. No longer was he the smiling, funny older brother type. Now he was withdrawn, sullen and private. He took his orders, he accepted the pain, and he was frozen again. James feels like he has no personality anymore, except the one wanted for him by HYDRA; though he still a loyal friend, and most of his personality is still hidden away deep down somewhere. There is a part of Bucky that mourns who he was, when he remembers it, and wishes that he could have it back. Bucky doesn't love the killing, but he also doesn't hate it. It's just something that he's gotten used to, as The Winter Soldier. Blood and death are the most familiar things he knows, and there is a comfort he finds in that. Free of HYDRA, Bucky finds himself slipping into a near constant state of confusion. He sees videos of himself smiling, pictures, but feels disconnected from them. Bucky is only sure that there is war and blood wherever he goes, paranoid that things will stay that way forever. He is trying, however, to find a place where he is at peace with the things he has done, and is trying to find ways to reacquaint with his old friend. HISTORICAL OVERVIEW: BIRTHPLACE: Shelbyville, Indianna RESIDENCE: Wanderer, sleeps where he can PARENTS: George and Winifred Barnes - Mother and Father, deceased SIBLINGS: Rebecca Barnes Proctor - Sister, alive IMPORTANT RELATIVES: N/A IMPORTANT PERSON: Steve Rogers OVERALL HISTORY: George and Winifred Barnes had two healthy, happy babies. The elder James, and the younger Rebecca. When Rebecca was born, James quickly took up the mantle of protective older brother, and loved his sister dearly. More than that, he loved his father, and looked up the man. From a young age, he decided that he was going to follow in his fathers footsteps and be a soldier. By eight, he had lost his mother, and by 12, their father perished in a training exercise. Bucky and Rebecca were sent to New York to live with a relative, where Rebecca was sent on further to a boarding school. James, instead of deciding to be withdrawn when he moved, went the opposite route and became the most outgoing person he could, easily finding friends wherever he went, and being a lovely, popular boy at school. The one thing that James had no interest in, however, was bullying. He was intolerant and if he ever caught any of his friends bullying, they quickly found themselves on the receiving end of Bucky's impatience. It was something very much like this, with Bucky and his friends walking home from school one day, when he saw someone smaller and younger getting beaten up by an older bullies. With only an initial hesitance, Bucky stepped in and beat up the bullies. After that, Bucky and Steve became inseparable. When Bucky found out that Steve was living at an orphanage, he insisted that his relatives adopt Steve as well. They went from being best friends, to brothers. Bucky was always there for Steve, usually letting Steve try to sort his problems out first before helping him, but always being there for him regardless. When they both finished school, Bucky became somewhat of a ladies man, but also fulfilled his lifelong dream of joining the army. Steve had also wanted to join, but Bucky was thankful that they rejected him. Steve wasn't built for the army like James though that he was. The last time James saw his friend like that, was right before James was set to be shipped off to Africa for training. They went to the worlds fair and Bucky certainly enjoyed his last night on the town. After training, and proving his worth as an elite sniper, Bucky joined the 107th, and for most of the war, stuck with them. The war changed Bucky somewhat, from his easy going self into a somewhat withdrawn person. He liked to be on his own more now than he did before, but still managed to hold onto that fun-loving smile. The tale of Captain America had circulated, from America, to the news that he was going to be doing shows for the troops. Bucky's team, and Bucky himself, dismissed the notion of some cartoon standing up for America. Before they were set to see the show, Bucky's team was sent out on a mission, and captured. For several days, the 107th were tortured. Bucky tried to save his comrades by putting himself in the chair, by taunting the guards, by refusing to eat. His willful refusal to submit meant that he also got a name for himself amongst the soldiers. One that would follow him even after Steve busted through the doors and saved them. James was confused when he saw his old friend, not believing that the man in front of him was his best friend of so many years. Little Steve, all muscled and leading an elite unit, whose name went from the 107th to the Howling Commandos under Steve's command. Steve and James were also part of a seperate team of superpowered humans called the Invaders, set up by then President Roosevelt for the times when the Commando's weren't enough. James felt strange at the fact that Steve would no longer need him, but hid it well. But Bucky was happy to have his friend around, and did still, out of reflex, keep an eye on Steve. Bucky was also happy that they had gotten enough information on the organisation HYDRA, that they could start tearing through Russia and Germany, getting revenge. It was during one of these missions, preparing for the final base that they were meant to board a train. In the resulting fight, the side of the train tore open and sent one enemy agent to his death. Bucky thought that he was surely going to follow, but passed out on the way down. He wasn't sure how he survived, but when he came to, he damn well wished that he hadn't. The torture he suffered now was near unbearable. He also found out that in the fall that should have killed him, he lost his left arm and had it replaced by a bionic one. Knowing that Steve had gotten out was what drove Bucky on for the first few weeks, knowing that Steve had to be looking for him the better part of a few months. Eventually, Bucky started to believe it when they told him that Steve wasn't coming. That he had been left behind. Not because he had wanted to, but for the greater cause of the war. To stop the Nazis and HYDRA. Bucky knew that there were bound to be casualties; he'd just never expected to be left on the table. Bucky couldn't say which he loathed more at first, the torture or the experiments. That latter injecting him with a version of the super soldier serum used on his friend, though Bucky could never quite tell if he was as physically strong looking as Steve was. When HYDRA started to clear his mind, bringing up memories of his past before electrocuting then out of him, the image of Steve he so desperately tried to hold onto started to slip, and he started to listen to the HYDRA scientists. Started to raise his arms when asked, to sit, to shoot. When he wasn't shooting, or stabbing, or crawling around in the desert, snow, forest, for HYDRA, he only remembers the torture, and then sleep. For seventy years. During that period, there was an extended length that he was awake for. He was wanted to train a young, very promising spy: Natasha Romanov. It was Bucky's mission to train her for combat, rather than espionage, and she took to it like she was meant for it; at least, she was by far his best student, and he eventually realized that he loved her, often slipping from his quarters and into hers so he could see her. It wasn't to last, however, and when Natasha was deemed ready, Bucky was put back into stasis. It started small, that Bucky, or The Winter Solider, as he was now known, started to deviate from his missions. Only slightly, at first, to test the limits. For those, he was abused more severely. But the times he managed to run for a while and get recaptured, those were excruciating. James didn't know why he had to run, there was just a sense in him that it was necessary. Perhaps it was the 'stick' method used to train him. Or the time they had left him awake for months at a time to train an operative at The Red Room. James Buchanan Barnes, Bucky to his friends, had changed. The Winter Soldier was just that, a soldier, an assassin, and he was extremely good at what he did. Too valuable an asset to just let wander free. It was during a new century, on a mission in America, that The Soldier met a man who almost succeeded in breaking through the torture infused haze surrounding his memories. Delivering a line that sounded too familiar for the other mans lips. Bucky escaped, managing to stay just barely ahead of HYDRA for some time. Outside of HYDRA's grasp, Bucky was not used to this world he found himself in. There were new technologies and movies and foods and Bucky had never felt himself feeling so alone. He had no friends, no commanders, no-one. Knowing that the familiar man was part of the Avengers, Bucky followed him to where he was and got to know the city, eventuating on the WWII exhibit in a museum. It was here that he was met with the same name: Bucky, and an image of himself. Or at least, someone that he used to be. He visited the museum for the next few days, trying to force himself to remember the war and this man who everyone was trying to say was once his friend. Steve and Bucky eventually met again, and as well, he stumbled upon an old flame. The young spy he'd known had grown into a very attractive and deadly woman. They had met, by chance, in the middle of a street on a mission, and she brought out things in him that he didn't want to deal with. They met again, several times. Things started to feel... different; and Bucky wasn't sure if he liked it or not, but it wasn't torture, and it wasn't cryosleep, so it was okay. And eventually Bucky felt like he could do this, like he had a chance to be normal-ish, with Natasha, his protégée, and this Steve Rogers, a man he remembered in foggy pictures; and that he could stay ahead of HYDRA if he just kept his ears to the ground. It was not to be, when HYDRA finally stumbled across him and subdued him. There was no quick cleanse this time, no peeling flesh or broken bones, no cryostasis. The Winter Soldier had escaped, and deigned to try to and live a normal life and that was not acceptable for the asset they had poured millions of dollars into making the perfect weapon. He was sensory deprived, beaten, telepathically forced to watch Steve and Natasha die until he had almost started to believe it. Bucky was made of stronger stuff this time, he'd seen the war momentos, and he knew he had escaped once before. He had to be able to do it again. HISTORY:
Same until:
1991. The attempted assassination attempt of Howard and Maria Stark was running to plan. Until it wasn’t. The car collided with a tree, The Winter Soldier disembarked from his motorbike, the driver side door was ripped open to reveal the scientist, but in kind, it also revealed The Winter Soldier to Howard. Though time may have grown his hair, and his treatment may have stolen the smile from his face, this was still James Buchanan Barnes. Howard attempted to connect with the man using his old military rank to no avail. He was dragged from the car. But when he resorted to the nickname that The Winter Soldier had been called in his youth, “Bucky”, the metal hand stilled in the air. He couldn’t do it.
After delivering Maria Stark to a hospital, Howard made arrangements for Bucky to be shipped to a secure facility in Antarctica where he spent the next ten years divulging what he could of HYDRA and their workings, and their manipulation of him that he could remember. It wasn't long before Bucky remembered his best friend Steven Rogers, and it was revealed to him his fate and that no-one had found him. Not losing hope that his brother was out there somewhere, James disappeared for several months to be found by the King of Atlantis, breaking his way through a patch of ice. After a short discussion, the pair spent almost two more years searching frantically for the lost American before they finally found him, frozen in the wreckage of the plane.
Once he was unfrozen, however, Bucky was still required to stay in Antarctica. There was still conditioning in his head that everyone suggested at least be suppressed before he made his way back to society. He was given a service dog for soldiers with PTSD for when it was discovered just how severe his episodes could get; and despite being mostly by himself, James still received regular visits from his friends and Steve, and eventually, Howard managed to work out a way to keep the conditioning from HYDRA at bay. It wasn't entirely removed, and the technology was shaky at best, but after the decade, he was finally able to join the world again. Bucky didn’t just integrate, however, he joined it in the most public way that Howard knew: becoming personal security for his son - the head of Stark Industries.
It was a double edged sword in that it made Bucky more known, but it also meant that HYDRA couldn’t touch him because his abduction would be too public. The Starks and HYDRA were at a stalemate. Instead, while several months of publicity continued, behind the scenes HYDRA had been requesting “their property” back. When Fury, Howard, Namor, and Steve refused, they were threatened with public disclosure of Winter Soldier files. When they still refused to be swayed, HYDRA had to release or admit a bluff. They released the files.
A shitstorm of media attention started again with senators and politicians and public figures calling for a public hearing. Most citing claims of treason and crimes against the state as reasons to lock him up indefinitely. With their own public identities, Fury, Howard and Steve were a united front, opting to explain the years of ingrained torture, corruption and brainwashing that James was unwillingly subjected to for fifty years as reasons why he could not, and would not take the stand. The fuss died out very quickly after that and the stalemate continued.
When it had seemed to have died completely, Steve approached his brother and asked him to join a team he was putting together. Dum Dum was already on board, and Bucky was all too eager to rejoin his old war buddies with new abilities under his belt. Knowing this, Steve used Bucky for a lot of infiltration and stake out missions. Blue printing and numbers were also things that Bucky checked out. He never went on any mission that had a high possibility of being public, and instead stood by Tony Stark's side so that people wouldn't think him a part of the team while the Defenders protected on his information.
