Jess focused on keeping the skies clear for a while, fighting with the chariot in order to get it to listen with her. She should’ve kept the Chitauri on-board to act as an interphase, it seemed, but it was too late for that now. Instead she did what she could to keep the air clear for those below to give them time to get settled in and set up. Soon enough they were nearing the collective of other agents and Coulson ordered them to the ground, so Jess hopped from the chariot and glided down, leaving the flying monstrosity to crash into a group of aliens. [break][break] “On the ground, Coulson,” she responded as she drew her weapons out and readied for another round of battle, seeing May land not far away. As the other agent headed toward Coulson’s position, Jess followed, knowing that regrouping was likely the best decision in that moment. [break][break] She saw Sigyn stepping into the open of the pier and made a move to follow almost before the woman could ask for help. “I’ll cover, too,” she informed Coulson as she made her way out to keep the Chitauri away from the Asgardian while she prepared her spell. Well-placed bullets and occasional use of her venom blasts kept the area around the sorceress clear while Jess felt prickling along her skin in response to the energy she was gathering in the air. Jess didn’t know what the woman was doing, but she was hopeful that it would create an advantage for their group of respondents in this battle. [break][break] Her eyes caught on a civilian trapped under a fallen piece of machinery and she got the attention of one of the other agents with her defending Sigyn to get him to follow her to assist the young man, who seemed like he would be in Sigyn’s line of fire if they did not get him moved. Getting to him was the easy part, however, even with the Chitauri swarming the area that they had to fight through. Lifting the heavy machinery from the man’s torso in order to free him took both their strength and an application of leverage with rebar before they could lift it enough to allow him to crawl out. Jess slung the young man over her shoulders and headed back towards their people, the other agent covering her. [break][break] “I need medics for this kid,” she called through the comms, hoping that they would meet her behind Sigyn and take him from there so she could go back to her job.
Jess would be the only one to see a disgusted expression cross Sigyn’s face as Phil called over the comms for them to bring in some of those ‘fancy alien weapons’ “Please, their craftsmanship on these things is atrocious. Yours are already much better.” Sigyn replied back in. She would try, but her initial plan wouldn’t allow for extra carry, and additionally, she wasn’t sure that Chitauri weaponry would work for the Midgardians; it seemed to be as bioenhanced and created as the aliens themselves.
Making her way to the pier, Sigyn found herself given cover by all three of the other agents, plus whoever else could spare their ability. She hadn’t turned the comm off, but the words would be meaningless to the other three, as she was speaking to the earth and sea, and not the Midgardians at the moment. It was easier now, but this spell of hers was going to have her place a great deal of magical energy into it. With the changes she’d made with her focus, it was not going to be as draining as it once had been on Midgard.
For those paying closer attention, the sea had been rushing in closer to the pier, and now it was rising, tendrils forming in the water, flowing upward as if someone were simply waiting to use them. Magic was incredibly versatile after all.
Still, she wasn’t usually the type to use this sort of magic. As soon as Jess was clear with the civilian and agent, and mostly only Chitauri were left on the pier, she released her spell, and the muttering stopped, and a single word was spoken. “Freeze.” The word sounded english to those that were used to the Allspeak, but there was also an overlay of a much older language present this time. The tendrils of seawater then struck, spearing through the swarming horde that had started charging her. The sea that had not been made into ice spikes surged and washed over the pier still, crashing down and freezing more Chitauri that were attempting to evade the spears of ice.
She didn’t bother with the Leviathan, as the flight capable army was taking care of it. “Release.” Sigyn said, and the seawater became unfrozen, leaving dozens of dead Chitauri lying on the pier. Only a handful of the horde remained, and they were definitely focused on her. Sigyn was leaning on her spear a bit, somewhat tired from using that much energy. If the Chitauri and the single Chitlian leader that remained thought that this would make her an easier target, they were very much mistaken.
She was from Asgard, and the child of a war goddess. If she could stand, she could fight. This alien army would learn the might of the Golden realm this day. “Well, you did say ‘shock and awe’, Agent Coulson.” Sigyn, said into the comm, sounding rather tired. She was certain that the numerous other Agents could take care of the stragglers on the pier, giving her enough time to catch her breath.

Melinda let Phil’s comment go without a response, much like she would have if he were standing beside her. Unfortunately for him, being on the comms meant he missed the change in her expression - from one of mild amusement, to one that said “life’s not fair, is it?”, which entailed a slightly arched eyebrow and the tiniest glimmer of a smirk at one corner of her mouth. If he thought he was going to get fair treatment after his behavior shortly before the last Chitauri invasion, he was dead wrong.
Perhaps not the best description there…
Agent Drew wasn’t hard to pick out in the crowd and Melinda nodded as the young woman fell into step with her on the way to the pier. Once they arrived, she offered Phil a nod as well, her eyes flickering up and down the man’s body in a cursory inspection. He seemed whole and healthy. Good. She intended to keep it that way. “Did what I could,” she intoned, shrugging as she took a closer look at the rest of the area. She’d taken out two Leviathans and more than a few of the footsoldiers, but there was no need to be cocky. No one person was going to win this war - it was a team effort.
Melinda caught sight of the man stuck out in the open shortly after Agent Drew found someone to help her. While the pair worked to free him, Melinda moved out halfway between their position and the safety of cover. Both of her pistols barked as she kept Chitauri from getting too close to the agents while they were as good as prone. As if sensing that she was out, a Chitlian sprang forward to engage Melinda personally. Shoving the empty guns into the holsters, the veteran SHIELD agent ducked and weaved in order to avoid the large alien’s first few swipes.
What followed was a blur, instinct kicking into overdrive as she faced off with the extraterrestrial. In three fluid moves, Melinda was perched atop the monstrosity’s shoulders. Her ankles and thighs kept her steady while the muscles in her arms flexed. Grunting from the effort, she wrenched the creature’s neck and with a sickening crack!, they both tumbled to the ground. Melinda rolled with the landing, popping back to her feet easily as Agents Drew and Hunsaker helped the injured man towards relative safety. The medic Melinda had given her field kit to a few minutes previously rushed towards them, even as Agent Drew called for medical assistance.
More aliens were approaching at breakneck speed, but if the crescendo in the Asgardian sorceress’ tone was anything to judge by, her spell was very nearly ready. Melinda dove behind cover, tumbling to a stop beside Phil. With a sigh, she pushed herself back to her feet and paused. Closing her eyes, she focused all of her strength inward before grasping her left arm by the deltoid and pulling hard. The shoulder was forced back into its socket with a quiet pop! and Melinda turned her attention to reloading new clips into her pistols before stashing them again. Spears of ice shot past, impaling many of the aliens as the Asgardian’s spell took effect and Melinda paused to appreciate the wrath of the quiet blonde.
By the time Sigyn’s voice rang out over the comms in plain English, she sounded tired. Melinda didn’t wait to ascertain whether it was fully safe or not before motioning to Coulson that she intended to dive back out into the fray. Rather than expend her ammunition, she waded in towards the remaining dozen or so using the weapons God gave her: feet and fists. She had no doubts now that she could take out the Chitlian by hand, but that wasn’t something she wanted to repeat quite yet, so she steered clear in order to focus on the regular foot soldiers surrounding the Asgardian.
It didn’t take long for the group of highly trained SHIELD agents to dispatch of the Chitauri and the single Chitlian, giving everyone a moment’s reprieve. If Melinda was tired, she didn’t show it. Her breathing remained even and steady as she moved towards her team leader, one of the alien glaives grasped casually in her hands. Leaning on the haft of the spear, she skimmed the surrounding area, gauging each direction for potential threat level. She had no doubts that Phil would do something similar before deciding on the next course of action for their little band of heroes.
"Kind of disappointing, really. Forget it then, figures we find the one alien race that doesn't have any superior stuff to use." He wasn't quite sure Sigyn's assessment was accurate, considering humans didn't have much (aside from the weapon he was holding, of course) that threw energy blasts instead of bullets. But she might be right about the weapons running out of charge if not held by one of the aliens - Romanov had used one during the last invasion, perhaps that was something the Chitauri would have corrected, though.
While SHIELD had their hands full at the piers, the might of the US Military was finally making itself known. While the F-22s and F-15s busied themselves sweeping the sky for the relatively slow-flying chariots, it was the ground-attack craft that focused on the Leviathans. Despite the fact that the massive creatures did fly, their armor was too thick for air-to-air missiles, which were generally meant to shred relatively lightly armored human aircraft. But the Hellfire missiles and laser-guided munitions the slower moving A-10s brought to the party, along with the A-10's huge Avenger gatlings, were meant to punch through tank armor like so much soft butter, and it wasn't long before they began doing their job on the massive alien creatures.
One of the Leviathans came into view, emerging from between the tall buildings, trailing blood and fire as sections of its armor sloughed off under the withering fire from the recently arrived aircraft. A long, swept-wing B-1 bomber roared as it cut low over the city, kicking free a single but much larger AGM that struck the monster dead in its already weakened armor and blew a massive hole clean through it, sending it plummeting for the ocean.
Well, Seattle might have had the Avengers, but San Francisco wasn't going to be without heroes today, at the very least. And after all, the aircraft weren't the only ones putting on a show. Phil kept a bit of distance between himself and the aliens, favoring well placed shots over May's much more... direct approach. One of the Chitauri vaulted a car, aiming to pounce on the spot where Phil had been, but the Agent was already moving, letting the barrel of his rifle swing into line with the alien's chest before firing a burst of the nanite-laced rounds to put it down. When the weapon clicked empty though, Phil threw it aside, swinging the Destroyer weapon up instead - that was going to have to be enough cooldown time.
"You could brag, you know. No one would blame you." he pointed out to May, vaporizing another Chitauri before moving to signal for the medic Jess needed - they had someone nearby thankfully, he couldn't have Spider Woman taken out of the fight looking after any injured just now. They had few enough 'regular' fighters right now, much less the superhuman. Of course, what they did have was doing damn well... and that was before Sigyn opened up a can of Asgardian kickass on the invaders.
Phil let out a low whistle at the spectacle, then turned and fired a long blast from his weapon into the last Chitilan standing, melting a sizable hole through its armored carapace while the other armed agents brought down the smaller aliens. "I like your style. I'd say that was cool, but May might hit me." Phil responded, grinning. He was putting on a good face, at least, but this was exhausting. It was possible he was getting a little old for all of this shit.
Either way, it was a major success for them - one large concentration of civilians moving again, and a mass of the aliens taken out all at once. Unfortunately, the reward for a job well done in SHIELD was always: more work. "Good work, everyone - resupply and take a moment to breathe, then we're pushing for Candlestick Park. I'm going to get on the horn with our friends in the sky and see if they can't clear us a path."

Nearly laughing to herself at the look that crossed Sigyn's face at the mention of the Chitauri weapons, she wondered again about the distribution of technology in the universe. It seemed like different species had separate focuses than their own did, from her limited view of such things. Humanity had always been fairly focused on creating destruction wherever they went, it seemed. "Maybe they just seem fancier to us because we're not used to energy weapons yet," she replied, although Jess was sure that there had been energy weapons back in Cap's day. HYDRA still had some laying around from that time. [break][break] "Thanks for the cover," Jess half-shouted to May as she crossed the woman with the young man thrown over her shoulders. It was good to have someone of Agent May's caliber at her back, even for something as relatively simple as that particular rescue. [break][break] Turning as she delivered the civilian to medics, Jess watched in awe as Sigyn's spell created what seemed to be a cascade of ice spears lashing into the aliens on the pier. The attack took out most of the Chitauri from the front and Jess stared at them from next to her. She'd never been more glad that the Asgardians had decided to be on their side after all. [break][break] The agents surrounding Jess quickly made their move on the remaining aliens, Jess herself moving toward a couple of them with a charge of her venom blasts ready at her fingertips. It would be the easiest way to dispatch of the creatures, and she ran for it, dodging around strikes from their spear before leaping around one's shoulders and digging the fingers of one hand into its neck to release the blast. The alien crumpled, something from inside it smoking at the power of the blast. Oops. A bit too much that time. She needed to get better at controlling the levels of those for the Chitauri. It was difficult to learn two whole new sets of data, cause, and effect all at once. As that one collapsed, Jess jumped to the second, releasing the second charge into it at a more reasonable level. Better that time. [break][break] Returning to Coulson as the last of the aliens were felled, she nodded in response to his orders, glancing around her to see how she could make herself useful.

So Let The Storm Come

Sigyn had been speaking more from an aesthetic point of view, but the Chitauri weren’t really big on great craftsmanship either. She was sure that SHIELD would be able to do outclass them easily with weaponry. Didn’t they already have something anyway? One of those ‘nanite’ bombs or whatever that Mr. Stark had invented for the aliens. She didn’t really understand it, but it seemed like it was very effective against the creatures. “It’s not that.” Sigyn said, directly answering Jessica. “They are terribly made. Who would use such material and then warp it as badly as they do? Utterly awful.” She commented. Her father and half-brothers and dwarven family definitely had an influence on her in that department. She did not think that she could get them anything made like guns by her father’s people, however.
That was more of the Svartalfar’s specialty. Engineers and Mechanics, they were, while her people were actual craftsmen. Well, that was a bit unfair, but Sigyn was still miffed about the whole debacle with meeting with Svartalf Prince.
The military forces were doing what they could, but they could only spare so many soldiers; many other places were being hit as well, and they were sparing who and what they could everywhere. Most of their forces seemed to be heading toward the capitol and major cities, like San Francisco. Here, it was mostly the air support. Ground troops were a scant five hundred, ready to assist SHIELD and the SFPD. Civilians were still being rescued, and the swarm was at least scattered about the city instead of in one collected group, the major one of those having been taken out with magic by Sigyn. That didn’t mean that it was over, far from it.
“That’s what you call a...pun, yes?” Sigyn said into the comm, sounding slightly amused in addition to being somewhat tired. Probably not as much as some of the other agents, though, Coulson included. Magic was still tricky to master on this plane, but she was definitely using it to her advantage when and where they could. The elemental spells would have to be limited to a minimum though. Jess cut through the troops easily enough, leaving some of them smoking. Interesting.
Sigyn didn’t over exert herself this time, and stuck close to Agent Coulson, as they started the push forward for Candlestick Park.

Melinda’s dark eyes shifted towards the other end of the avenue as another of the gargantuan beasts came floating into view. She swore inwardly, even as she spied the gouts of smoke and what she could only imagine to be blood trailing out from a multitude of areas on the beast’s body. Her lips parted, ready to call out a warning to the agents around her, but the swift arrival of a B-1 bomber stayed her voice. The jet’s package struck true and Melinda watched with a slight sense of relief as the Leviathan went splashing down into the ocean a few hundred yards out from the pier.
“I could,” she purred, shifting her gaze back towards her long-time partner. “But then what would you complain about?” The flicker of a smirk appeared on her lips, just long enough for Coulson to play witness to its existence, before her face slipped back to its natural mask of stoicism.
Instead of responding to Agent Drew, Melinda simply nodded, her body still poised and ready should anything attempt to get past her. It wasn’t long before the Asgardian’s spell went off, and Melinda was able to relax for a few heartbeats as she tried to pick out the location of the remaining beasts. Her eyes swiveled up to find the top of her skull as Phil let slip a small pun. Leave it to him to keep things light and humorous in the midst of a serious battle. As much as she exuded an easygoing exasperation at Coulson’s verbal jabs, he of all people knew that his sense of humor was one of his most endearing traits to the usually serious agent.
As Coulson gave the order to resupply, Melinda turned towards him, her dark orbs seeming to sink in as she inspected him again. He put on a good show, but she knew him well enough to know that slight hitch in his voice. Phil was tired. She wondered idly if his lack of stamina was a by-product of the TAHITI project, or if it was simply his age getting to him. Although she was roughly the same age as he was, no one person was the same in every aspect.
Moving to stand beside him while the others prepared for the trek towards the park, Melinda held out one of her pistols to Coulson, along with her last two extra clips. She would have given him her second pistol, too, but that might start an argument. “I have no need for two, and you’re down to none.” Her logic was sound, and the look on her face suggested her think so, too. “How about a trade?” she asked, her eyes falling to rest on the large energy weapon as they began to move off as a group towards the park. She didn’t want the gun, not really. But it was large and bulky, and would only weigh him down on the trek.
Phase 1 threads should be wrapping up by Friday, March 11th, 11:59 PM EST. Try and come to whatever stopping point you can. Threads can also end earlier if you take out the Leviathans. Thanks!
Phil let out a low whistle at the Chitauri Jess left smoking. "Nice cooking." he quipped, before he looked back to Sigyn too. "Well, you know they're not all that pleasant to look at themselves. So maybe they're just reflecting that in their aesthetic."
Asgardians definitely made better looking technology, of course, but he had a feeling Sigyn knew that already, and he didn't need to go lumping any more praise on them. After all, they had yet to deliver on the whole 'God of Cleaning Up After Yourself' idea. Though after this, he was really going to be hoping for a god of Cleaning Up After Other People. Because the West Coast was going to be one hell of an oversized mess in need of cleaning up. Big time.
"Yep." he agreed, giving Sigyn a wan smile. Phil Coulson wasn't above bad jokes, not even a little bit. To May's comment, as they continued out, Phil thought for a moment. "Probably the weather. It's always so gray in San Fran." he settled on, keeping up a pace as they moved toward the park. Hard to say what had hit him... He'd always kept in shape, but it was harder than it used to be. Not everyone could be as ageless as May. Then again, maybe he'd just taken a hit harder than he thought, earlier. It was one thing to move into a room and take down a few badguys - a war was another matter. Then again, it might be the heavy cannon he'd been lugging around all day. He was going to have to talk to Fitz about that.
"You just want my toy, don't you?" he said with a grin - but it probably made the best sense. He was going to have to keep coordinating troops, whereas May... Well, sometimes you gave the heavy your big gun. And May was definitely the heavy. "I'm gonna want this back afterwards, you know." He slung the weapon off his shoulder and held it out by the strap, before taking the offered pistol and magazines, sticking the latter in the empty slots on his harness.
The moving band of SHIELD and police had a surprisingly clear going of it for a couple blocks, but the other shoe dropped when they got into view of the now-defunct NFL stadium. Chitauri exploded out of the buildings on either side of the street, most through the windows, some through new doorways the hulking Chitilan created as they charged outward. Delta team and the police dropped into cover, cutting them down as they came into view - Phil trusted his team to get the job done.
"Overwatch, this is Warrior Actual - heavy resistance around Candlestick Park - Now would be a very good time for some air cover." As he spoke, a Chitilan erupted from the building to his left, letting out a roar as it swung for him. Phil dove under the swing, hitting the pavement in a roll that took him just behind the creature. Without his big gun he didn't know that he could take it out conventionally... Well there was an idea. Coming back to his feet, Phil reached into a pocket with his free hand, and slapped something onto the alien's back before ducking behind an overturned news van. The Chitilan spun to look for him just too late - meanwhile, the beeping 'lockpick' explosive counted down, then detonated its shaped charge right through the monster's chest.
"They're getting desperate - last push, team!"
Go wild, since I think this will be our last round. Air Force will come in for support, take out the last Leviathans. Your turn, z inactive jessicadrew

Disdain for Chitauri craftsmanship aside, Sigyn seemed otherwise calm in the face of everything that was going on. Jess had to admire the coolness under fire, as Jess herself was freaking out a little by this point in time. Of course, Jess could be easily ruffled when outside her comfort zone, which wasn't very big to begin with. It was one of the things that she needed to work on. Sigyn made the calm and collected thing look easy. Maybe Jess could ask her for tips when this was all over. [break][break] Shooting Coulson a grin as he quipped over her accidental over-frying of the Chitauri, Jess couldn't help but feel slightly flattered that he even bothered commenting. She'd been exited to join this team, as Phil was a living legend in SHIELD and one of the higher-ups that she had always admired. She was still a bit nervous around him, all truth be told, but things like this were still nice. [break][break] The respite was brief and soon enough they were in the midst of things again, with Jess diving in quickly. She still had bullets and she still had some energy buildup, though she wanted to be careful to use that sparingly in order to avoid exhausting herself; she leapt into the fray easily, contorting past blows from the aliens as she slammed bullets into skulls and twisted spears from grips only to drive them back into the holder's body. [break][break] By this point in time, Jess was rather confident with her ability to take out the aliens, even as exhaustion was going to be setting in any minute now. While it was true that the battle wasn't exactly easy, the clear weaknesses of their foes made it at least not brain-bending. "Heads up," she called to her teammates, "There's a large contingent of Chitlian moving this way." She started gathering power in her fists, as that was far more effective on them than the bullets, due to their makeup probably.
Sigyn shook her head at that, still getting the sense that Phil was joking. Then again, when your father was King of the Dwarves, you learned how to make things work and last, no matter if you wanted to or not. Not that it was common knowledge that Asgard didn’t really make most of it’s own technology. That was leftover from some other time, she suspected, but she didn’t really know. A lot of their tech was also connected to the throne’s powers, and she didn’t really know how that worked either.
Sigyn was a little concerned at Phil’s state of being. She wasn’t as good as Nanna or her mother, but she could sense that something big had happened before she’d arrived in Midgard to him. He just had that sort of sense about him. He turned back to his conversation with Agent May as the four of them and a large group of other SHIELD Agents that could be spared headed down toward the park. The pair of them exchanged weapons; looked like Midgard had somewhat ‘reverse engineered’ some of Asgard’s own technology, though it was closer to something that Dark Elves tended to use; Asgard stuck with less complex weapons, mainly due to how hard it was to find and craft Uru in the first place. Probably more difficult than this Adamantium stuff that Midgard had.
The streets were mostly clear, then as the reached the park and its stadium (Sigyn was curious about that, because from her understanding, most parks did not have stadiums in their vicinity). Chitauri and Chitlian alike burst out of the area, but Delta team and the police took care of the brunt of them, mowing them down. This was definitely a last ditch effort and desperate move by them. Though the proved that they weren’t completely stupid. Maybe they had a plan in mind for this.
Phil called for Air Cover, and then it was Chaotic, as Sigyn found herself a bit cut off from rest of the group, who were charging into the fray. As cool and collected as she seemed, Sigyn was having more of a freak out than she would admit to her teammates in this endeavor. She was a scholar and a housewife previously, not a warrior. She wasn’t Syn or Idunn. However, a battlefield was the best place for her to have her issues out. She had to focus on her task of helping save the city so that it could survive another day. After that was done she could deal with her own issues when they came up.
Over the comms she heard Jess’ call about the large group of the stronger and slightly smarter Chitauri. Phil called for the last push, and most of the armed forces of SHIELD and police alike were doing quite well. The contingent seemed to split off at random, one group charging Jess’ position and another just scattering in a bunch of different directions. “I think they have a plan in mind…” Sigyn said, trailing off as she quickly noted two of them coming toward her. Moving with beyond human speed, She managed to get out of an area where they could flank her, which is what she suspected they were trying with Jess.
Swinging out with her spear, she slashed across, cutting heavily into the two Chitlian soldiers she was facing. One stumbled back from the force she’d thrown into it, while the other tried to press forward, only to be jabbed once more with the spear, before finding the very weapon buried in it’s torso as Sigyn leapt forward, shoving it straight where she figured the heart would be, and it not, the chest still held a lot of things that were vital there. At least, she hoped so. Turning toward the other one, she ripped the spear out of it’s comrade’s body and leveled it at the creature, shooting it with a beam of light-based energy. She was trying to limit the magic though.

“From what I’ve heard, it’s one of the most colorful cities in the country,” Melinda deadpanned, turning to give Coulson only a cursory glance as the joke slid off of her lips. San Francisco was well known not only for its rolling hills and defunct prison, but also for its bright Pride festivals. She had no intention of pointing that particular fact out, of course. Why spoil a perfectly good joke by explaining it, after all?
The next look she sent in Phil’s direction suggested he might be a few screws loose for doubting her intentions with the gun, but the pair had worked together long enough for him to know it wasn’t a terribly serious look. Despite the trying situation, she was surprisingly calm and pulled together. Granted, the moments she lost her nerve were few and far between. This was just another war in a long list of wars the soldiers of America - and now the soldiers of Earth - had fought. Even if they finished with the Chitauri, what was to stop the next alien race from invading? And then, of course, there would always be humans themselves to fight in the war against wrongdoing. “I know.”
She was actually somewhat surprised by the weight of the gun as Phil handed it over. It was just as heavy as it looked. She’d expected something lighter for some reason. Now she knew why Phil was so winded, though - lugging this thing through a battlefield would get tiring for even the most exceptional soldier. As one such individual, she sucked in a deep breath and worked to keep up with the group’s pace as they moved towards Candlestick Park.
As aliens exploded into the street, Melinda grit her teeth and prepared for the violence.
The Chitlian that came at Phil was quick to engage with her partner before she could get his weapon back. Scowling, she turned to face the pair of Chitauri approaching her, their glaives at the ready. There was no use expending a blast from the weapon in her hands, so she pushed it out of the way, letting it hang at her back. One hand slid down, removing a knife from her belt, which she used to parry the first blow, even as she side-stepped the second attack. It didn’t take long to dispatch the pair, and soon enough she was darting around the overturned news van between herself and Phil, who’d just blown a hole in a Chitlian.
Without a word, she handed the large gun down to him, shaking her head to decline the return of her pistol. She still had one holstered at her hip if she got desperate, but for now, the knife suited her just fine. Spinning on her heel, she darted back out into the fray, the blade slashing out at the nearest Chitauri. The sound of Jess’ warning caught her ear, and she spared the Chitlian contingence a moment’s worth of her attention. Even so, it was enough to notice the same thing Sigyn did.
They were planning something.
While two split off from the group to deal with the Asgardian who’d been separated from their own contingent, Melinda finished off the Chitauri she was engaged in melee combat with before sheathing her knife and springing into action. A half-crunched police car provided her with the items she needed, and with quick fingers, she snagged two reddish sticks from the popped trunk. “Sigyn, get out of there!” she called out over the comms, wrenching the plastic caps off of the sticks. “Overwatch, I need guns on my flares now.”
Dragging the exposed edges of the flare in each hand against the rubble to either side, she hurled them one after the other towards the hoard of Chitlian. Although the aliens hissed in disapproval at the emergency signals, they seemed to know that the items were of no real danger to them. The heavy caliber munitions pouring out of the two F-15s were not so gentle, however, and had no qualms obliterating the hoard without mercy. Melinda’s gaze swept over the area, and she nodded to the Asgardian as she spied Sigyn off to one side. Good, she’d gotten out of the line of fire in time.
A slow, wailing roar echoed out over the area, drawing Melinda’s gaze skyward as a Leviathan came easing down out of the atmosphere over the park. She could hear the chatter signifying the air support turning their eyes on the new threat as well. Her fingers itched to be up in the sky with them, laying into the monstrosity with everything she had, but for now, she was stuck watching the show from on the ground.
White tail after white tail went soaring towards the beast’s open maw, but it didn’t seem terribly swayed. And then there was something else flying up towards it. From her vantage, they just seemed like small spots of light, shooting straight up and into the creature’s mouth. Realization struck her as the first blasts like muffled thunder went off inside the Leviathan. More and more fast-moving spots of light soared up towards it, some of them getting into its mouth again, but more of them hitting the side or missing entirely.
The ones that missed still managed to provide everyone on the ground with a significant show as someone in the defunct NFL stadium unloaded the park’s entire payload of fireworks into the beast. Her best guess was that a groundskeeper had holed himself up there when the attack hit. Thankfully, whoever it was seemed to have enough clarity of mind to assist the defensive effort.
As the Leviathan crashed down at the 50 yard line, its dying body still being pounded with missiles from the bombers that had circled back, the fireworks continued to fill the San Francisco skyline. Even if it was only temporary, this was a victory, and in a war the likes of this one, they needed to take every victory they got.
