Name: Nick Fury Age: Sixty-nine and still young. Occupation: Acting Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Member Group: S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Powers & Abilities: Nothing a normal man can't achieve with the right amounts of due diligence. Strategic planning takes a strong mind, not a super serum. Playby: Samuel Jackson |
PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT LIKES: |
The first step to maintaining an efficient operation is a firm concept of organization and structure. Routines keep people in check, keep things reliable, and make certain that they are precisely where they need to be, when they need to be there. A good routine is no different than a fantastic filing system.
Respect
Without respect there is dissension. With dissension comes mutiny and all other forms of insubordinate behavior that simply will not be tolerated. Nick may be hard and to the point, he may manipulate a situation to his favor, but he makes certain to ensure an air of dignity on his vessels. From the Director to the goddamn cleaning crew, every member of S.H.I.E.L.D. is entitled to respect.
Success
You may be thinking there isn't a man or woman alive who doesn't have some sort of fondness for success, but you'd be underestimating just how stubbornly dedicated Nick Fury is to getting what he wants in that case. Success, to Nick, is more than just winning a battle. It is any small victory, from a verbal sparring match to a game of cards you never should have initiated in the first place, that brings Nick a distinct sense of pride and confirmation of capability. Being capable is what got him here in the first place, and reaffirming it on a consistent basis is what keeps his often-times insubordinate ass in the boss chair.
Security
Ensuring that America and its allies can sleep easy at night is what Nick Fury has dedicated himself to his whole life. There is nothing he won't do or try in order to ensure that Americans and people in general can feel safe and secure in knowing that there are people out there fighting the good fight to keep this planet free.
America
Who doesn't love America? Don't answer that unless you actually enjoy the concept of Nick's fury in your face. Think its funny? Go ahead and try spewing your anti-American bullshit in his presence and see just how funny it is then.[/ul]
DISLIKES:
As much as Nick Fury values respect, one thing he won't abide by is disrespect. Considering the fact he over-rides his own commanders more often than not, it's rather pot kettle black over in the insubordination department, but good luck spewing that at Fury and getting away with it. What he does with his bosses is his business. How you act on his ship and on his teams, is also his business. Only difference is you can damn well bet you'll regret pushing the envelope when Fury decides you've gone one step too far.
Doubt
Doubt causes people to second guess themselves - or worse, the people they work with. It is the biggest cause of failure in a working unit, because as soon as people start doubting one another they stop trusting one another. Without that trust comes bad battle making decisions and feelings of hard-headed independence that causes all sorts of trouble. Doubt, truly, is a warriors bane.
Hostile Takeover Attempts
Now these are just a pain in the ass. There's always gotta be some schmuck with grandiose ideas of taking over the something or other. From Germany to America to the whole damn planet. Or in most recent case, the bloody nine realms themselves. People seriously need to start brushing up on their history books because that shit'll show you two things pretty quickly. The bigger your domain, the harder you fall, for one. And for two, don't mess with planet Earth.
Hostage Situations
Alright, if anyone asked Fury what his least favorite part of the job was, he might be honest enough to tell you it's that moment when he has to make a call. When its on him whether a hostage gets to make it out of a mess alive or not. Its a shit job, a shit deal, but somebody's got to do it. Doesn't mean he's gotta like it.
Security Overrides
We're not going to go back to the pot kettle black story here because you already know that song and dance. It doesn't matter to Nick that he does the same damn thing sometimes. Having his orders overruled is a straight up piss off, and you can be damn sure he'll do everything in his power to make sure that override goes absolutely nowhere fast. Even if it means taking a rocket launcher to one of his own jets.[/ul]
STRENGTHS:
Nick is a very goal oriented man. When he gets something in his head, he focuses on it with a dangerous diligence until it is born into fruition and shaped precisely the way he envisioned it in the first place, with maybe one or two minor kinks away from the original design.
Intimidating
Nick appreciates the value of being a scary ass motherfucker and he isn't the slightest bit ashamed of it. Intimidation goes a long way in getting ones way. Having the political and military connection to back it up just makes it that much more effective.
Strategic
The key to success is to be capable of planning for it. You don't win just because you want to, you win because you put your mind to the task and plan for your contingencies. Nick puts a lot of value in strategy, but he understands those quick thinking moments that come when the enemy springs a trick on you. Good tactics are just as important as the long haul.

WEAKNESSES:
He's said it once and he'll say it again if he has to. If the higher ups make a stupid ass decision, he's going to ignore it. This borders on insubordination sometimes, and is outright mutiny other times, but considering his track record for success regardless, he's managed to keep his job, and he is going to keep on keeping it, whether the higher ups like it or not, cause getting rid of Nick Fury is a really stupid ass decision.
Stubborn
Fury likes to have things go his way. In fact, you might even say its his way or the highway. Sometimes, that's true to a literal extent, but not always. Nick has a very firm sense of what is right and wrong - and more often than not, he's right and you're wrong. And if that's a bad thing and you dislike him standing up for what's right, then make some educated life choices for a change and maybe the two of you will get along a little better.
Dictatorial
Remember what we said about his way, or highway? Fury runs a tight ship and, freedom loving though he may be - and he loves him some Declaration of Independence - on Fury's ship, his word is the law so if he tells you to jump, you best be asking for your fucking parachute son.[/ul]
GOALS:
Honestly the fact this needs an explanation gives Nick some serious concerns about the intellectual capacity of his team of commanders. If he needs to reassign some positions, you can bet its going to happen.
Organize and facilitate the cooperation of the Avengers Initiative and the newly implemented Mutant Unit
Alright so maybe this one could do with an explanation - except not really. Its pretty straight forward. The Mutant Unit is already assembled; Xavier took care of that grunt work. They know how to work together, now its just a matter of getting them to work right under S.H.I.E.L.D. and alongside the Avengers Initiative. Together, these two units are the best defense Earth has.[/ul]
FEARS:
Again, this is pretty self explanatory. If this war is lost its going to devastate and enslave the entire population of Earth. As the acting commander of Earth's primary defenders, that failure will ultimately fall to him. Going down in history as the man who let the world be overthrown by a bunch of ugly ass aliens just doesn't sit right with Fury.[/ul]
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Nick Fury is direct and to the point. He doesn't waste his time coddling people or beating around the bush. If something needs to get done, he damn well gets it done. Procrastination is not an option. If someone tells him no and he still thinks the answer should be yes, he'll go ahead and do it anyway - and vice versa. Does this mean that he has no respect for authority above himself? No. It just means he won't sit idly by and let desk jockeys dictate what needs to be done in the middle of a war. If a superior makes a judgement call that Fury deems to be detrimental to the overall cause, he'll override it whether he's authorized to do so or not. There's a reason his tactics are classified under weakness, folks.
One thing that can be said about Fury is that he has a phenomenal judge of character. When he picks out people for his teams, he does so with a very set idea in mind. Is he aware of the conflicts of character in each and every team he's formed? Absolutely. Does he use those conflicts to his advantage to form units that, personalities be damned, do a good fucking job of protecting this planet? You're damn straight he does. Does this mean he is more manipulative than he is friendly? Yeah, probably. But they don't hire Directors of security operations for their fuzzy dispositions.

OVERALL HISTORY:
After the battle of Manhattan, successful though it was, Nick recognized the fact it could have gone south really goddamn quickly if that portal hadn't been shut down. The Avengers Initiative needed more punches to pack along, but he was seriously reluctant to add on to a team that was only just beginning to work together and form up as a proper, well functioning unit.
Placing them in charge of another unit though - that he could do. The trick was to build another unit. Now, Nick is a man who values his time and values getting things done right the first time. Being aware of the mutant community was part of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s job and it just so happened there was a ready-made team just waiting to be utilized. All it took was a bit of negotiation and clever strategics, and Nick found himself working alongside Charles Xavier and preparing the plans for how best to utilize the X-Men (whom Fury still refers to as the Mutant Unit as that's the official classification of the team).
When the Asgardian Thor arrived bearing the war criminal Loki, Fury was not immediately impressed. Talk of a coming war, and a greater army than ever before didn't do much to improve his mood. All the same he could see the benefit to having two Asgardians on the team even if he didn't trust Loki any farther than an infant could throw him. The clause on him went a long way to smoothing things over, however.
Fury keeps a close watch on Loki and has him report in daily. The Asgardian works closely alongside a team of researchers to help better define the Chitauri weaponry and armor, in order to come up with intel on how best to fight the damn things. Fury knows there is something the trickster isn't saying, but he isn't about to press on it just yet. Right now, Fury's main concern is making sure Loki doesn't throw off the team dynamic too hard.
Which of course leads directly in to the fact Loki's damn kid is now wandering around the hellicarrier. If it weren't for the fact said kid had the capability of turning into an enormous wolf, Fury would question the benefit of a soldier who'd been chained up on a mountain top since before the dinosaurs. All the same, Loki had a clever way of wording matters and a bit of research showed Fury the Asgardian wasn't lying.
The fact Thor had absolutely no respect for his authority on the matter is honestly the only reason Fenris is even mentioned here; mainly because one thing Fury is not going to tolerate is insubordination. His ship, his rules. God or not, respect is expected on this ship and Fury is about done with these goddamn Asgardians and their badder-than-your-ass attitude. [/ul]
