I'll walk alone because, to tell you the truth, I'll be lonely The nineteen forties. World War Two had been officially declared and the American army was rallying up its troops to show its support to the Allied forces. There was nothing Steve Rogers wanted more than to stand alongside his fellow Americans and fight for the right to freedom and peace. He knew he wasn’t the strongest or even the healthiest of people, but what right did that give him to stay at home where it was safe, while his friends and neighbors were out there on the battlefield fighting for the cause? Steve had no wish to be left behind, but more than that he had no wish to sit around and contribute nothing to the world when every soldier was needed. Maybe he didn’t have strength – but he did have heart. Surely, that was enough, wasn’t it? I don't mind being lonely After being denied the right of recruitment due to his poor health and physical capabilities, Steve continued to submit his application to every recruitment fair that came to town, falsifying his information despite the laws against it in a desperate attempt to have just one officer give him the chance he needed. Consistent rejection only made him more determined, and his respect for the soldiers at war never once faltered. Despite being told by friends, family, and army men alike that he wasn’t cut out for battle, Steve remained steadfast in his determination to make a difference. When my heart tells me you are lonely, too Steve’s consistency finally paid off when he was overheard by Abraham Erskine who saw fit to recruit him for a special military unit called Project: Rebirth. He was taken to a training camp where his physical detriments proved to be precisely as troublesome as past recruiters predicted. However, Steve’s intellect and ability to think outside the box allowed him to pull ahead on multiple occasions and, in the final test, it was his desperate desire to protect that made him succeed above all the rest. Throwing himself bodily upon a grenade he believed to be live in order to shield his comrades, Steve proved himself to be more than just a soldier, but a good man. Which was precisely what Erskine was looking for. I'll walk alone, they'll ask me why and I'll tell them I'd rather Accepted into the final stage of the program, Steve was injected with Erskine’s serum. Muscle mass all but tripled, health issues fell away and superhuman strength, speed and endurance all flooded into Steve’s system in one fell blow. The system was almost shut down as the agony of his cries alarmed the scientists, but he insisted he could take it – and he was right. He transformed successfully, though there was no time for celebration. Within moments of his change, there was an explosion and a gunshot, HYDRA agents having broken into the facility and stolen Erskine’s serum right under their noses. Steve’s new capabilities were put to the test and he was able to stop the serum from being taken to HYDRA, but he had not been able to save the life of Erskine nor was he accepted by his former commander into the army. There are dreams I must gather The governor saw potential in Steve and he was offered a promotional position as Captain America, selling bonds to his fellow Americans in order to put bullets in the guns of American soldiers. It felt like a sell out at first, but Steve eventually warmed to it. It wasn’t until he stood before real soldiers, in the stark reality of true war, that he realized how much of a sham he had allowed himself to become. Pushed forward by Peggy Carter and a need to protect an old friend, Steve decided to take his Captain moniker literally, and dive behind enemy lines to rescue a platoon of missing soldiers. Dreams we fashioned the night you held me tight Steve’s successful recovery of the missing soldiers resulted in his assembly of a military unit dedicated solely to targeting HYDRA bases. After several successful missions, Steve was locked in battle with Red Skull and, in order to preserve the lives of thousands that were placed in jeopardy by Red Skull’s manipulation of the Tesseract, he crash landed Red Skull’s plane into the Antarctic not long after taking a rain check on his dance with Peggy. For Im dancing with tears in my eyes Seventy years after crashing Red Skull’s plane, Steve was dug out of the ice by S.H.I.E.L.D. and placed into a simulated environment to keep the shock of the world’s change from doing him in. However, certain inconsistencies alerted Steve immediately to the falsehood and broke out – only to become completely lost in a 21st century Manhattan street. Surrounded by vehicles, billboards and images the likes of which he’d never dreamed of, Steve was surrounded and confronted by Nick Fury, who informed him of precisely how much time had passed since he’d fought Red Skull. `Cause the girl in my arms isn’t you Lost in time, every friend either dead or too old to remember him, Steve had no idea where to even begin adjusting to this new world. He focused on boxing and fitness training because it was the only thing that was even remotely standard, but he was well and truly lost. A week after his awakening, Nick Fury came to him with a mission, and though he had nobody now, he at least recognized Fury, and the importance of any mission involving the Tesseract. Dancing with somebody new Aboard the hellicarrier, Steve met with the people who would become his new unit and team. Natasha Romanov and Bruce Banner were the first, then there was Tony Stark and eventually, the Asgardian Thor. Though the team was staggered in militant awareness they all had incredible gifts and abilities that Steve found cause to admire - when he wasn't being exasperated by the sheer amount of indifference some of them showed toward authority. When it`s you that my hearts calling to The sheer irritation he felt in Tony Stark's presence shifted when the man threw himself into danger in order to restart the hellicarrier's flight fan. The man became a proper soldier in Steve's eyes in that moment, which was why he made the error of asking if Coulson was the first soldier that Stark had lost. Steve had finally accepted his new role and his new team and was taken aback by the insistence that they were not soldiers. Yet for all that, in the end, the team waged war. Trying to smile, once in a while, The army from outer space was alarming to say the least, but by treating it as a wartime scenario no different from HYDRA, Steve was able to take charge and assist the Avengers in defeating the Chitauri army while also ensuring there were minimal civilian casualties. Fighting alongside them showed Steve their strengths and their blindspots, and he began filing away how best to operate what that battle cemented in his mind as his unit. But I find its so hard to do. A year passed since the battle of Manhattan, during which time the Avengers all went their separate ways. Steve dedicated his time to assisting the city in repairs, and returning to S.H.I.E.L.D. in the hopes they would have something for him to do. He was often left completely bereft of what to do with himself, and made occasional errors when assisting the city in repairs that made it more than a little clear he wasn't nearly as adjusted to the new times as he pretended to be. Whenever depression seemed to cut too close, Steve would make his way back to S.H.I.E.L.D. and hang around with the agents, participate in routine drills and even acting as advisory counsel. The frequency in which he did this earned him the titled occupation of S.H.I.E.L.D. advisor from Director Fury, so there was at least some benefit to being completely at a loss in life. Now, with the threat of another war on the horizon, Steve is torn between feeling horrendously selfish, and just a tiny bit guilty for the fact he finally feels like he knows where he fits in. |
