Essex stared down at the human and mutants gathered beneath him, awaiting their response. One of the mutants - he didn’t even need to see her genetic makeup to know she possessed power; the azure shade of her hair and flesh said it all - seemed to agree with his urging that they needed to take the fight to the sky. She did not have the capability of flight, it seemed. But perhaps the young man beside her…
The arrival of the Asgardian drew Essex’s attention, and he nodded politely to the battle mage. One brow arched high as she swept immediately down to the human male and proceeded to fawn over him like a pet - which, considering all that he knew of the Aesir, may not be a terribly incorrect assessment. Cultural differences aside, this was not the time for such behavior.
Offering a stern frown to the group, Essex lifted himself back further into the air. Despite the shows of public affection, the Asgardian was at least quick to get her head back into the game, and he spied her lift both herself and her paramour into the air via some form of extraterrestrial magic. Good. She had taken his warning to heart. Or perhaps she just wanted her lover in the air with her in some odd romantic gesture. Either way, his suggestion was being met with action.
That was about all the interaction he really needed (wanted?), and as he continued to raise himself higher into the air, he altered his trajectory so that he was moving in a different direction from the Asgardian and her ward. Using his new gift of telekinetic ability, Essex struck down any Chitauri who leapt at him from the nearby buildings, flinging their leaping bodies at passing chariots as he moved off towards a large grouping of chariots beginning to swarm the courtyard of a public building down the street. He’d seen the Asgardian deal with one of the Leviathans on her own - hopefully she could do it again with the last monstrosity in the area bearing down on their location shortly while he played the part of a hero and saved the screaming masses being shot at like fish in a barrel…

“My name is Death and the end is here…”
Morrigan shook her head gently at her best friend, but she still seemed to carry a light grin on her lips as they waded through the onslaught of Chitauri. “So unprepared,” she chided, a teasing ‘tsk’ noise echoing out from her mouth. “What am I going to do with you?”
The arrival of a new person inside the hastily constructed barricade caused Morrigan’s spine to stiffen, but she quickly realized it was just the blonde woman who’d managed to take down the monstrosity in the air. There was no hiding the sudden lift to both of her eyebrows as the woman (Asgardian, perhaps? There had been a few at SHIELD, and she certainly fit the bill.) attached herself instantly to the SHIELD agent. Was now really the time for public displays of affection? If the look on Morrigan’s face seemed a bit disgusted, it’s because she was.
But then the woman’s gaze shifted to rest upon Morrigan herself. Morrigan could feel the heat of her gaze, but for the life of her, she couldn’t figure out for the life of her why the woman would have any ire towards her. No one had laid a finger on her lover, and no one had openly threatened him - especially after she’d assured them all she was not at risk. Perhaps the woman was jealous… If that was the case, however, she had nothing to fear from Morrigan - there were far greater things than lust and love and all of that rom-com bullshit for the azure mutant to deal with. Her personal life was not nearly as important as the cause of the Brotherhood. And so, instead of responding to the woman’s visible ire with words, Morrigan simply rolled her eyes and turned to help form a second wall for the cordon with the bus.
It was a shame to see such apparent pettiness from people the humans considered gods.
Morrigan only paid the departure of the woman and her SHIELD agent a small percent of her full attention, choosing to focus instead on her best friend as he stepped forward to offer an attempt at comfort. Letting out a quiet breath, she nodded and swiped at her face again to make sure there were no drops of crimson staining her upper lip. Once certain she was free of blood, she took a moment to lean up against the bus. “I’ll be fine. That was just a lot at once,” she assured him, placing a blue hand on top of Kyle’s in a gesture of assurance.
“I’ve got the…” She paused as the mutant lifted further up into the air before turning and heading off down the street. “Okay, so… I’m not alone in thinking that was weird, right?” she asked, arching an eyebrow at the flying mutant’s back. “I guess neither of us will be flying,” came her next response, laced with a gentle chuckle. “It’s for the better - I can’t keep as close of an eye on you if you’re flying around with the birds.”
With Morgan dead, Kyle was truly one of her last friends. He and Geo had been with her through thick and thin these past months, and although she knew she was horrible at showing her gratitude, she really did appreciate everything they’d done for her. Taking on the role she had was not easy - especially for such a naturally shy person as herself. Thankfully, Geo was socially her polar opposite, which helped more than he could probably ever know. Kyle was her sounding board, though, a voice of caution to listen to if she ever went too far.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t sure they’d gone nearly far enough with their cause yet…

Hold that thought down.
The woman that had previously been flying through the sky seemed to take offense to their presence on the ground near the SHIELD agent. She was... strange. Kyle immediately didn't like her. Of course, she quickly carried the agent that had been threatening Mo off with her back into the sky, so Kyle figured that was a good thing in the grand scheme, even if they weren't exactly being useful in the 'working together' department.
Not that it mattered. Even if they weren't being friendly, they seemed interested in taking down the aliens nonetheless, and that was a help. Less for the Brotherhood to do.
The mutant in the sky was another issue entirely; he didn't seem inclined to help them at all, instead seeming content to float above them and lazily take down things in his way. He didn't even stop for them and Kyle couldn't help but stare after him alongside Mo. What an asshole. "Not alone at all," he replied, confusion over whatever that had been coloring his voice.
Chuckling a bit at Mo's next words, he returned attention back to the two powers he had already absorbed. Probably for the best that he not try anything new when what he was doing now seemed to be working pretty well. "We should get focused on taking care of these things, don't you think? I'd rather not be fighting them all day if I can help it." He'd rather not be fighting them at all, but that had already become impossible.
"Let the blonde and her pet go after the sky whales and keep with the ground army?" he asked, thinking that was the most sound plan for the moment. The blonde seemed to know what to do with the things in the sky, and Kyle could throw more fire without much trouble.
He would do whatever Mo asked of him, though; he supposed that was where he was going to get himself into trouble with this Brotherhood nonsense.
Amora had only set Jonas down upon a nearby building half a moment before trouble reared its ugly head. Barreling around a corner came two Chariots carrying a Chitauri to fly it, and a Chitlian with a weapon to pick off humans where it could. They both quickly took notice of the woman flying upon a green disc, and made a beeline for her coordinate.
They made it a race. The one that managed to get in front was not paying as much attention to the target as the other chariot beside it. The vehicles whizzed by, and both of the Chitlians took the split second of disorientation from speeding by, to fire their energy staves at Amora, hitting her square in the chest. Her body rocked as she was sent backwards involuntarily into the side of a nearby building from the impact of the searing blasts.
Pain seared through the Asgardian enchantress' body, subduing her mental faculties long enough for her to lose her control over the levitation that had kept her airborne thus far. She vaguely noticed she was falling, but by the time she realized what was happening, it was too late. When she crashed into the pavement below, she twitched, clearly trying to raise herself up. It was futile, and with a sigh, she slumped back down, sinking into unconsciousness.

He had barely stepped onto the top of the building before it happened, without any chance to react two of the chariot riding chitauri made a beeline for Amora, and he stood in shocked horror as she was launched from her platform, into the building, and down onto the ground. Every single part of him felt sick to the stomach looking at the Asgardian goddess plummet to earth, she had tried to get up but even someone as powerful as her was unable to shrug off the trauma.
Seconds felt like hours to him, completely stunned in agony as his mind tried to push him off the building in some suicidal attempt to get down, but as it were he wasn’t going to be of any use, he had to stand up there simply looking down knowing he had let Amora down. But something inside of him knew that she wasn’t dead, something lingered in his mind, that thing she had done to him was still there and he knew that if she truly was a goner then he’d know.
Dropping down the bag, he immediately pulled out a bolt-action sniper rifle from it, which he had been given the special bullets for. He could do nothing but continue fighting, and make sure nobody was going to get close to Amora. “Morrigan, I hope your buddies won’t kill me for this.” Chambering a round in his rifle, he aimed straight at the leader of the mutants, and without a single moment of hesitation he pulled the trigger and let a bullet fly.
But the bullet was not destined for her, instead it whizzed past her head and embedded itself in the head of one of the bigger aliens called ‘Chitlians’, and the beast dropped down to the ground. It would’ve been an extremely risky shot, if it had been done by anyone but him.
Re-chambering a round, he gesticulated towards Amora, hopefully one of the mutants would do her a solid and get her somewhere safe. “And this one is for Amora…” aiming across the sights, he tracked the Chitlian that had delivered the shot, and without a moment of hesitation he guns the alien out of the sky. If Amora woke up, he could at least tell her that he made sure the one that had hurt her had gotten the retribution it was owed.
But he had barely been in his sniping position before the Chitlians had already put a bead on his position, and in an attempt to stop him from picking off their people they dropped a pair of Chitlians on the roof to take him down a peg. But right now, he wasn’t interested in taking cover, his mind had gone into survival mode and he was going to walk out of it alive so he could be there to help Amora.
“Sorry guys, but you’ve caught me on a very bad day…” Throwing his rifle forward at one of the beasts, the short moment of confusion gave him a chance to unsheathe his blade, roll forward, and hamstring the beast before using his handgun to shoot it in the head. The second saw what happened, and rushed him and tackled him straight into the chest and off the side of the building.
Falling back down to earth with an alien accompanying him, he switched positions and emptied his magazine into the beast before the crashed through the roof of a van, alien first and him right after him. But he was going to be the one walking away from their attempt to kill him…

“My name is Death and the end is here…”
Morrigan watched the levitating man lift further into the sky without a word, simply shaking her head as Kyle assured her she was not alone in her thinking. That was good to know, at least, that he was with her on this level. “Yes, of course,” she responded, grunting quietly as she pushed off of the bus, back to her full height. The energy it had taken to move the bus had been quite the sum, but resting for even just the past few moments was a help.
No sooner had Kyle suggested they work on the ground forces than a pair of chariots whizzed by overhead. Morrigan watched as they both took shots at the woman… and landed both… “Well, shit…” The woman had not made it onto Morrigan’s list of people she would gladly interact with ever again, but she was powerful. They would need her power later on if there were more aliens like this in the city - or in the world. “Get her to safety,” she called out, nodding towards Wheatley. The teleporting mutant responded with a clipped ‘Yes ma’am’ before disappearing from behind the barricade. Morrigan couldn’t help but frown. She was only in her late twenties - surely that wasn’t old enough to be considered a ma’am yet.
At least he hadn’t called her anything derogatory, she supposed.
As the high caliber bullet whizzed past her head, Morrigan’s eyes widened and she snarled. Her gaze shifted up towards the rooftop where the SHIELD agent had been deposited, and both eyes narrowed, but she stayed the mutants about to take flight to dispatch of the man with a simple gesture of her hand. “Someone get eyes on our six!” she shouted, motioning towards Blaze and a mutant whose name she hadn’t learned quite yet.
Returning her gaze to the agent on the roof, she pointed to where Wheatley had just appeared by the downed woman’s side. A slow grin formed upon her lips as she nodded, a silent affirmation that she would keep the Asgardian safe while he worked on keeping the skies clear. As if her mere thought had ruined the possibility, Morrigan watched as Jonas flew off of the building, locked in combat with one of the burly aliens. The crash of alien and human connecting with car was loud, but her irritation lay with the situation, and not the noise.
Sighing, Morrigan glanced up towards the Leviathan closing in on their position before turning towards Kyle. “I hate to say this, but I think that’s ours to kill now…”
Wheatley returned then, pointing to cafe they’d emerged from. It still seemed in tact. The Asgardian should hopefully remain safe there until she awoke to fight another day. Motioning to Kyle to snag one of the alien weapons near him, she grabbed up one of the spears she’d seen the Chitauri wielding and stepped up to Wheatley. “Time for some thrilling heroics.”
Two at a time, Wheatley teleported the members of the Brotherhood from the ground, up to the top of the Leviathan so that they could all work at it. When he’d collected all who were willing to join in this part of the fight, she motioned towards the downed SHIELD agent. “Get him back to his perch if he’s able to keep shooting. We could use the cover.”
Once he was gone in the blink of an eye, she turned towards the half a dozen mutants balancing on the back of the Leviathan with her. “Concentrate your attacks,” she called out to the men and women following her lead. “This stuff is tough,” she continued, kicking at the thick scales of the beast, “- we need to get under it if we want to have any chance of taking this thing down.”
While the rest of them used their powers to pry away sections of the armor, she focused on the head of the beast. The plates weren’t quite as thick here, but that wasn’t her goal anyways. Lifting her hands, she slammed them in a downward motion, aiming her blast of force at the tip of the creature’s nose. It jerked, but didn’t sink all the way down to the ground. Still, there had at least been some success. Sending another downward blast towards its nose, she smiled inwardly as she noticed a significant difference in their altitude.
A dozen more blasts like that, and she was fairly certain she could drive the beast into the ground where it would at least be unable to destroy more buildings until her comrades finished it off.

Hold that thought down.
Kyle winced as the blonde fell out of the sky. Well, crap. This was exactly how he didn’t want things to go. Losing a combatant when they were already outnumbered - especially one of the clearly more powerful ones - was not a good thing at all. This was why he’d never agreed to join the X-Men, actually. Too much stress on his system, even with the reward of doing good at the end.
He groaned as Mo pointed out that the giant sky-thing was theirs to take care of now, even though he knew she was right. They had to take out the big ones in the sky; those were what was causing the most structural damage and it would be good to stop them before it got any worse. He snagged one of the spears, hoping that the pointed tip would come in handy in attempting to kill the beast - it had a brain, right? - and stayed at Mo’s side as they began the transport to the beast’s back.
Not exactly a fun place to be. Kyle wasn’t really scared of heights, but he was pretty sure anyone would be scared of this kind of height. “I might be sick,” he commented to Mo with a moan as he wedged the spear between two plates on the thing’s head to keep his balance.
He was a bit surprised to see that the plates were some kind of metal, not the organic exoskeleton that he’d assumed they’d be. This was good news. He had fire, after all. Focussing on that, he aimed heat directly at the plating, trying to make the flames as hot as he could stand them - absorbing the pyrokinetic’s powers gave him some amount of resistance, but it wasn’t a lot when the flames were angled so close to him.
Kyle could feel the altitude of the beast slowly drifting downwards, and he caught the actual pyro’s attention. “The plates are metal, help me heat them up and the others can slice through them far easier,” he instructed, and the other man caught on, quickly copying Kyle’s idea and gaining the attention of others who came closer to take advantage of the metal once it weakened. Hopefully they could drive something into its brain and knock the thing dead.
Gritting his teeth, he pulled his blade out of the forehead of the chitlian, sheathing it in the back-holster. He couldn’t help but shake his head at the complete mess the thing had made when it was the first to careen through the roof of the van, fortunately for him he had only a few nasty but survivable cuts to show for it, just a few more scars to add to his eternally growing collection.
Rolling open the van door he sat on the edge looking outside, the war wasn’t going to wait for him to gingerly walk back into the fray. And from the looks of things the mutants were busy working on weakening the last leviathan, if they could take the thing down they might be able to break the morale of the aliens, and at least give them some form of respite…
Looking at a few mutants that had come to check on him, he shook his head and pointed them into the fray. “I’m fine, just do your thing.” grabbing his sidearm he checked the clip, which he had emptied into the chitlian. A waste of bullets, but in the heat of the moment he was more interested in taking the beast down into the abyss with him rather than think about what happen after the fact.
But now, the battle was raging on harder and harder. And he noticed one mutant that had the ability to fly. “Kid, can you get me up to the roof again?” without even a moment of hesitation the mutant complied and brought him back up to the roof where he had tumbled down from a few minutes earlier, this time he hoped that he wouldn’t get blocked by a bunch of pissed off Chitlians on a mission to kick his ass.
Keeping hold for the mutant for a second longer he looked him in the eye. “Go tell the blue haired girl to take that son of a bitch down, I'll make sure your backs are clear.” letting go he let the mutant deliver the message. “Oh, and make sure the street is clear!” whether the second message registered, he did not know, nor did her care at this moment.
What was more important was killing the Leviathan. So he grabbed the duffel bag and immediately went for the ‘in-case-of-doom’ option that he had always kept inside. A six-shot grenade launcher with 40mm high-explosive armor-piercing grenades, it would make sure any alien trying anything other than run away in terror would have a very bad day.
Placing the launcher next to him, he kneeled on the top of the building, the entirety of the street visible below him, and the Leviathan getting battered by mutants above him in the sky. The only thing he could do was simply do what he was always doing, grab the sniper and continue picking off any alien trying to go after the mutants.
The first victim was a pair of chitauri standing on the rooftop opposite to him, both perfectly lined up and too focused on harassing mutants. Unfortunately for them he chambered a round and delivered the anti-chitauri round straight into one, and out of the guy next to him to keep them both down permanently.
Enjoying the small victory over a few mooks wasn’t something he could do for long, as he noticed the sound of the chitauri chariots making their way towards their position in a foolish attempt to stop the mutants from taking down the Leviathan.
But their dreams of helping their hive-minds were short lived, Jonas grabbed the grenade launcher and slowly leading the first target he let the first grenade fly, immediately aiming at the second target and giving it the same treatment with a second grenade.
Both went up in a perfect explosion, the flaming wreckage pelting the street with satisfying thuds. But again his celebration was short lived, with the sound of more of the bastards coming their way. “Come on Morrigan, I won’t be able to keep this up all day...” he hissed through his teeth, focusing on taking down as many as he could, as long as he had ammunition to burn…

“My name is Death and the end is here…”
The teleportation up to the Leviathan’s back was an interesting feeling. It made her entire body tingle - not entirely a good feeling, but not bad either. Shaking off the sensation, Morrigan focused on the task at hand, taking stock of the beast’s back as Wheatley apparated and disapparated over and over until the rest of the members willing to join in the fight were up top.
“You got this?” she asked, her voice quiet as she placed a comforting blue hand upon her friend’s shoulder. “You say the word and you’re far and away from here, Kyle.” Wheatley’s teleportation had a considerable range on it, so long as he knew where he was heading. The Brotherhood had more than a few bunkers where they met, and taking Kyle to sit out the rest of the battle somewhere safe would be as easy as snapping her fingers.
Down below, Wheatley arched an eyebrow at the SHIELD agent as he tried to assure him of his okay-ness. “Whatever you say, dude,” the teleportation mutant chuckled. He didn’t move away, though, waiting for the agent to look back up at him again so that he could pose his next question. Jonas beat him to the punch and he smirked. “Why do you think Mo sent me down here? Clench up!”
With that, he stepped forward, grabbing Jonas’ arm. The pair disappeared from the crushed van on the side of the street, popping back into existence near the agent’s duffel on the roof a few heartbeats later. Wheatley’s hold on the agent slackened, but it seemed the agent wasn’t quite done with him. A look of concern flashed across his face, but it quickly shifted into one of bored agitation. “Again - why do you think Mo had me bring you back up here?” he quipped. “You do your thing, we’ll do ours.”
And with that, he was gone.
Morrigan noticed a presence behind her, but the personal shield she had cocooned herself in would at least save her from any initial attacks if a Chitauri leapt down at her. Instead, the sound of Wheatley’s voice rang out, and she turned her chin ever so slightly to show she was listening. “Mr. SHIELD is back up and gunnin’,” the Jersey native drawled. “He wants us to clear the streets, but he said he’s got your backs up here.” Stealing a glance towards the roof where Jonas was perched, Morrigan grit her teeth, but nodded.
“Do as he says.” Wheatley wasted no time in disappearing. When he blinked back into existence on the ground, he rallied the Brotherhood members not so keen on heights, and together that group began working on clearing out the streets of the frightened sheep humans.
The sound of Kyle’s voice was a reassuring one. Not only had he chosen to stay, he was taking initiative and helping to lead the others. If he ever stopped second-guessing himself and truly allied with the Brotherhood, he’d make a damn fine second-in-command. She could certainly use a friend by her side in this new endeavor, after all.
It only took eight blasts total before the Leviathan’s nose dipped into the ground. After the seventh, Morrigan called back to those still along for the ride, warning them to brace for impact before giving her eighth blast all she had. The cement gave way from the mass of the beast, its forward momentum creating a deep trench in the middle of the street as it continued to try and writhe its way forward. Morrigan refused to stop what she was doing until a familiar face appeared in front of her.
The brief wiggle of his fingers was all it took to warn Morrigan of her friend’s intentions, and as soon as she was away she heard the rumble of earth shifting behind her to entomb the front of the beast’s head. No matter how hard the Leviathan wriggled, it was stuck where it was for the time being, so if they could strike a killing blow, it at least wouldn’t destroy any more buildings. “Glad to see you finally made it to the party,” she called back to the geomancer, flashing a quick grin in his direction before turning back to what Kyle and the others were working on to see if they needed help pushing scales back further.

Hold that thought down.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine,” he assured Mo with a small smile. He didn’t want to leave her here. While that might not have been the smartest reasoning for standing atop a giant monster, he wasn’t going to back away from it now. He could stay away from any future battles far easier than he could extract himself from this one.
The SHIELD guy seemed to be faring pretty well on his own and Mo seemed to be steady in what she was doing, so Kyle decided to put his full concentration in his own actions. There was little that he could do except continue with what he’d already been doing. With the addition of more flames, the armored plating heated up rather quickly.
“Hit it now!” He instructed nearby allies with alien spears and they nodded, slicing into the top of the creature. The armor parted easily, and him and his brief partner stopped applying the heat in order to assist in the actual cuts. The beast roared as they made it through the things skin, but there were other things to be taken into account as well. Like the bones that seemed to be keeping them from the brain.
With a grimace, he glanced around to see that they were almost to the ground, only for rock to encircle the thing’s nose to keep it fairly stationary. “Everyone, get the spears in as deep as possible and get as far away as you can. Help with the other aliens,” he said, helping to drive the spears in as deep as they could go. Returning to Mo’s side, he looked at the geomancer that had already trapped the leviathan’s nose. If he could just…
Kyle frowned, concentrating on the geokinetic powers and then using them, along with a touch of his natural telekinesis, to move a large slab over the thing’s head, where the spears were sticking out, before dropping it. The creature’s roar was cut short as the spears were driven into its brain, but that didn’t stop it from lashing around a bit. The movement sent Kyle tumbling to the ground below and he scrambled to his feet, grimacing at the ankle that was definitely quite sprained from the fall.
“I’m good,” he assured Mo with a smile. And other than a few scrapes and bruises, he’d actually come out of it pretty okay. He never wanted to do it again, though.
