The alias that accompanied it wasn’t any good any more since all his aliases, along with those of all the other SHIELD agents, had been spilt across the internet but that wasn’t why he needed it. He’d been out having a drink with some of the lads last night and, well, they got into a friendly little argument. One that the contents of his fake passport could clear up with no problem. The only question was, where had he put it? Oh right. There was a false top to one of the cabinets in the kitchen that held a number of small interesting things. With a little bit of grunting a whole lot of cussing Dum Dum managed to free the false panel that obviously hadn’t seen use for a while, and retrieved two plastic bags. The larger of the two contained an assortment of passports. Plucking the one he was looking for out of it he made sure the others were sealed against moisture before gathering up the bag that had been stored with it so he could put them both away. Something in the secondary bag caught his eye. It was full of old photographs. Really old photographs. Oh man, he’d forgotten about these. The passports and the bet forgotten Dum Dum carefully removed the stack of photos from their home and holding them carefully he carried them to the living room. Falling into a chair he took a closer look at the top photo. It showed a young man who had just reached adulthood with an arm around an equally young woman. The woman was in a leotard that sparkled despite the picture’s distinct lack colour and the young man wore dark fitted shorts. They looked so happy, smiling at the camera with their entire future ahead of of. Dum Dum remembered it well. Having grown tired of his father’s heavy handed manner and wanting more to life than to settle down and become a farmer he’d snuck out of the house when the circus had come to town one year and didn’t leave. At the time Dum Dum would have said the differences that stemmed between him and his father was solely because his dad was an ignorant, backwater man who had never gone more than 10 miles from when he was born. Now days he’d say it was because their personalities clashed. His father like rules. He followed rules and expected that any rules he made were followed without question. This just didn’t work for Dum Dum who was of the belief that as long as the spirit of the law was upheld it didn’t matter if the particulars were lost. They butted heads over this quite a bit. For a while he simply worked as a grunt for the carnies, helping in the back breaking work of setting up and tearing down. The work was a little more strenuous than working on a farm had been but he didn’t really mind. The work was fascinating. How many other jobs had you setting up a small city in the dead of night only to tear it down the next day or even a few hours later? After plenty of blood, sweat, and tears, he was given a sideshow of his own: Strongman. The woman in the picture was a lovely young woman who started off as an assistant in his act, sewing his costumes and balancing on objects he was lifting, and later became his wife. <p>Ah how he’d loved her, however he would be the first one to admit they should not have gotten married. Theirs had been a whirlwind courtship and they married a lot sooner than they should have. It wasn’t long until the bloom was off the rose and they discovered the heart pounding emotion they’d been swept up in had simply been infatuation. Not everlasting love. They settled into a somewhat comfortable existence - divorce was not an acceptable option at the time so they had made the best of what they had - but Dum Dum had found himself wanting something more. The circus had long started becoming routine and he was itching for something new. The next picture showed the same young man - slightly older - standing on a train platform in a shiny new army uniform. Grinning into the camera he looked excited and practically vibrated with the need to depart. The picture was taken during a trip back home shortly after completing boot camp. The Army was everything Dum Dum had wanted it to be and more. While it wasn’t what you could call glamourous it was still right up his alley. He particularly enjoyed learning the various forms of hand to hand combat. As a youth he was known to get into the occasional brawl, but now instead of being chastised by his father for unnecessary rough housing, his skirmishes were sanctioned by the U.S. Government. Dum Dum did quite well for himself working for the Army. He even managed to some how get promoted all the way to Corporal. How the hell that happened he could only guess. His theory was they had meant another Timothy Dugan but he sure as hell wasn’t going to correct them. His favourite moment from this time had to have been when a pompous Sergeant decided to visit Dum Dum’s station. The man thought to highly of himself and got a kick out of making everyone’s life positively miserable. A few days into the Sergeant’s visit it was brought to Dum Dum’s attention that the jeep the man had commandeered was having some technical issues. So being the extraordinarily helpful man that he was he gathered a few other men and with the assistance of a handful of tools and a few flashlights they fixed the jeep right up. Oddly, the Sergeant cut his visit short by a week, citing that his equipment was failing dramatically. According to him everytime he went somewhere in a jeep he was accompanied by a horn serenade and light show. It must have been a user error, honestly, everyone else who drove that van after the man left had no such problems. Chuckling at the memory he turned to the next photo. Clipped from a newspaper this picture was a little better known. Six, dirty yet every grinning men, posed in a wide road each clutching their weapon. Captain America and his Howling Commandos. Their fearless leader wasn’t pictured in this particular shot but just about everyone else in their initial band of merry men were shown. Ghads how he missed those men. They had become his brothers and he would have done anything for them, secure in the knowledge they would have done the same from him. Odd how they’d all been trapped in the same Hydra camp for months but they had never really interacted before. It wasn’t until after they had been broken out by a brave man on a suicidal mission who decided to take on an entire Hydra camp in the hopes of rescuing his childhood friend. The mission was a rousing success and the commandos were born to take down as many Hydra bases as they could get their hands on. And for a short time that’s exactly what they did. For the most part their missions were successful a Dum Dum liked to think they played a significant part in taking down the Axis. Even after the loss of Bucky and then the Captain. Those were dark days. Still, with aching hearts, they carried on their work. Suddenly feeling rather melancholy it was time to move on to the next item. A small laminated badge took the newspaper clippings place. Shortly after the end of World War II a super secret espionage (kind of redundant right?) agency was created and Dum Dum was recruited. By that time he was back home with his wife trying to give married life another go. While she had kissed him goodbye and told him he needed to come home and visit as often as possible he knew she was relieved to be once again leading her life independently. And Dum Dum wanted that for her. While theirs might not have been an ideal marriage he still wished her all the happiness. She was a sweet gal and certainly deserved at least that. Dum Dum loved all the challenges SHIELD through his way. Impersonate a U.S. Offical? Sure! Spy on an enemy's army base? Okay. He approached everything that was thrown his way as a new adventure or as a new skill to master. It was a great game. The next picture in his stack was much like the first one. There he was, much older of course, with his arm around his wife once more. And there, cradled on her hip was a toddler who had her mother’s green eyes and his wild red hair. His baby Marilyn. She had been the joy of his life. Marilynn had actually been a bit of a surprise. Like most married couples, he and his wife had tried for a baby over the years but had never been successful. Then one day he’d come home from a mission only to find not just his wife at home but also the most beautiful babe he’d ever seen before. Not that he was biased or anything. Marilyn was actually part of the reason why he had made the decision to retire from SHIELD. He’d missed all of her firsts; her first word, her first step, her first smile. He didn’t want to miss the rest of her upbringing. So he turned in his resignation to play dad. It didn’t quite work out the way he had planned. A lump caught in Dum Dum’s throat just thinking about it. That urge to be in the thick of things took a hold of him once more and he found himself leaving home every now and then to consult. This turned out to be a bad idea. Somewhere in his career he had goofed up. He made some careless mistake. Though he had been trained in espionage, and thought he was rather good at it if he said so himself, somewhere he left some loose end that led the very people he had been fighting to stop back to his venerable family. He’d come home from his week away only to be greeted by… well lets just say the sight he’d encountered was not something he’d wish even on his worst enemy. His wife and beautiful child were gone and Dum Dum found himself thirsting to hurt those who had taken his family away from him. Seeing red he threw himself back into his work at SHIELD. What was the point of retirement if you couldn’t enjoy it with the ones you loved? SHIELD became his life. So much that when he was offered the chance to take the infinity serum - a solution that would drastically lengthen his life span and increase his metabolism and healing - he jumped all over it. Some people were only give one lifespan to make a difference in the world and he was being offered several. Quite a lot has happened in the years since then. He’d traveled all around the world, talked his way out of a few sticky situations, and fought his way out of others. Sometimes he just used explosives. He met people who he was happy to share a drink with in that instant and others whom he’s remained in contact with over the years. And he’s gotten the chance to work with some of SHIELD’s finest agents. Some missions he was sent on lasted only a few weeks, like the one where he was sent to retrieve a case that intel showed carried valuable weapons that would give an upper hand to an insurgent group SHIELD had been closely monitoring. Let me tell you, retreiving that case was no cakewalk but they accomplished it. Only to get it home and discover the weapon everyone was so afraid of was a few bottles of finely aged wines. Now that was a welcome home to remember. The wine flowed freely and before long it was all gone. The entire case continued vintages none of them would have been able to afford on their salaries and instead of savoring it as was done with any fine vintage, they caroused, sang, and drank more than their fair share. It was a good night. Other missions could last a couple of years. The most memorable one probably was when SHIELD got word of a slave trading ring in the Democratic Republic of Congo that dealt exclusively in gifted humans. His mission was to infiltrate the ring in order to gain as much information on the group as possible. With luck they could take them out for good. That mission lasted for three long, miserable years but in the end they got their guys. He couldn’t sleep for weeks after getting home from that one. Nightmares plagued his sleep nightly. The world has changed quite a bit as well. Technology improved by leaps and bounds, countries and risen only to fall (with help of course), and what was considered beautiful one decade was no longer cherished the next. He hadn’t changed much over the years. While he had a place to stay when not working he still got restless if he felt like he had been home for too long, a stiff drink and good brawl were still his idea of a good night, and he would always be there to help those who needed it - be they friend or stranger. This life of his had it’s ups and downs but he wouldn’t trade it for the world. Life was what you made it, and he was going to make the best of it. A small smile played across his lips as he cleaned up the handful of photos he’d gone through. Placing them lovingly back into the bag he found them in he carefully secured the photos and passports back into their hiding space to be discovered again on another lazy afternoon. Whistling he picked up the passport that started this whole thing and sauntered out of his house. He had a bet to win.
