To that end, he'll do anything and give anything he has to. He would die for them if need be, and there are days (and even more nights) where he wishes that's all that had been demanded of him. Living is a whole lot harder. He used to be a fairly easygoing, friendly guy, always ready with a joke or to buy the next round. Now he’s tense and haunted, weighed down by the staggering responsibility that’s been placed upon his shoulders. He rarely smiles anymore, and never laughs. Amalroos has a lot of hate inside him. He hates Thanos for what the Mad Titan has done to his people, his family, and himself. He dreams of someday not just killing him, but destroying him utterly. He hates Asgard. Svartalfheim has been conquered and subjugated by Thanos, and Odin, who calls himself Allfather, hasn't lifted a finger to protect or help them. Nor has Thor, supposed 'Defender of the Nine Realms.' The fact that both of Asgard's princes have leapt to the defense of Midgard is just more salt in the wound. Lastly, he hates himself. He has prostituted his talent for war to murder and enslave innocent peoples for the sake of his own. He's applied all of his genius to making the campaigns as surgical as possible and sparing as many as possible, but the fact remains he's put millions beneath Thanos' boot. He's sacrificed his honor and he knows it. Along with hate, Amalroos grieves. He mourns the loss of the Svartalfheim of his childhood, knowing that even if – when he tries to tell himself – his world is finally freed, it will still never be the same. Too many have been killed, too much has changed or been destroyed. Even so, he’ll do everything in his power to win it the chance to rebuild, though he doesn’t anticipate living to see the result. Following Thanos’ defeat, he fully expects to be tried and executed for the crimes he’s committed at the Titan’s command, and will gladly take full responsibility to shield his men and his people. One thing Amalroos doesn’t have a lot of is hope. Still, he’s not a man who gives up and there’s a tiny flame of it burning inside him, and his time on Midgard has fanned it a little higher, a little brighter. If any world can stand against Thanos, it’s this one, with its mutants and its Asgardian allies. This may well be the Svartalfar’s only chance, but can he risk approaching them, with the stakes so high? And would he be believed – and aided – even if he did? The decision is his to make, and sooner rather than later, he’s going to have to choose. Powers Like all Svartalfar, Amalroos is extremely long-lived. He’s also far stronger, faster, and more durable than even an Olympic-level ordinary human. With his power of umbrakinesis, Amalroos is a shadowmancer. He can create and manipulate darkness for a variety of purposes. Most often he uses it in subtle and intangible ways, such as to cloak himself and his men, or to blind opponents. He can also, albeit with considerably more effort, manifest more tangible effects – blasts like a powerful wind, or wide, sail-like wings that enable him to soar and glide. Hard, solid objects like blades or bindings still remain beyond him, though. Amalroos can change his appearance, but it's difficult and painful, so not something he does lightly. Presently he's disguised as Aubren Stark. Other Abilities Amalroos is a grandmaster at making war, with an intuitive knack for tactics, strategy, and logistics that he’s honed to a razor’s edge by centuries of study, practice, and experience. He's not perfect, but he's a very dangerous man to face across a battlefield -- or a chessboard. Though born a prince, Amalroos earned his command the hard way. He learned how to take orders before giving them, studying and emulating experienced and effective officers. He's an excellent leader who inspires morale and fierce loyalty. Weaknesses The Svartalfar are Amalroos' greatest achilles heel. He will meet any demand and obey any order, no matter the cost or how morally repugnant he finds it, to protect them. Amalroos suffers from a serious and chronic case of noblesse oblige. He's a Prince of the Blood. It's his duty to sacrifice himself for his people. As Commander of the forces of Svartalfar, Amalroos was charged with defending his world. He failed, and he feels that failure keenly. That he simply lacked the numbers and resources to win, and that he did far better than anyone else could have, is immaterial. It was his responsibility, and he failed. As an enemy agent engaged in espionage behind the lines, Amalroos is in a perilous situation. Were his true identity to be discovered, his life might well be forfeit. History The third-born of Svartalfheim Queen Alflyse's five sons, Amalroos fell just outside what would, in Migardian parlance, be termed 'the heir and a spare.' As a prince of the blood, he was still raised with the expectations and education that came with his station, but beyond that he was free to indulge his own interests and passions. For Amalroos, that was military history, whether of the Svartalfar, the Aesir, the Jotnar, or even the Migardians, it didn't matter. He was fascinated by war, and by all the factors, great and small, upon which turned either victory or defeat. The brilliance of a commander and the the skill and dedication of his troops were only part of it. There was the quality of their intelligence, the nature of their weapons and materiel, the competence of their logistics, and always the element of simple chance. He studied accounts of every battle he could get his hands on, analyzing what had gone right, what had gone wrong, and what could have been done better. Still, Amalroos was no armchair general, and he realized that to truly know and understand war and those who made it, he would have to experience it from the bottom up. Knowing that his royal station would affect how he was treated, even with the best intentions of all involved, he disguised himself and enlisted at the lowest rank. From there, he worked his way steadily upward, learning invaluable lessons from everyone from the rawest new recruits to the wiliest old veterans. It wasn't until the dark lord Malekith attempted to seize the throne that he revealed his true identity. At the time, Amalroos was a Captain, with a hundred and thirty men under his command. As the war raged, his unit became steadily smaller but ever more elite, with no shortage of men eager to join. In part that was due to the cachet of fighting beneath the Prince's banner, but mostly it was because, with the pragmatic instincts soldiers have possessed since time immemorial, they saw that those who served under him survived, and those who served under him won. Which wasn’t to say it was easy for them, or without sacrifice. Malekith fought to the bitter end, driven finally back to his palace fortress, where he held civilian hostages to use as shields. Amalroos’ launched a covert operation, his men infiltrating the palace to free them, only to encounter an Aesir strike force attacking for reasons of their own. Caught in the fog of war, they clashed, with fatal consequences for several of the troops on both sides and many of the hostages. Ultimately, Malekith was destroyed and the Asgardian force withdrew, but a great deal of bad blood remained. With the defeat of Malekith, Amalroos’ place as Svartalfheim's great war leader had been established. For the next two centuries, the Svartalfar knew peace under the wise rule of his mother, Queen Alflyse, but he was far from idle. In addition to rebuilding, retraining, and restructuring the military, he designed defensive emplacements and systems. Nor did he neglect his personal development, concentrating especially on his studies in umbrakinesis and greatly increasing his power, scope, and range. All of this was brought to bear when the forces of Thanos began their campaign, and -- though it bought precious time to enact Alflyse's daring plan -- none of it proved to be enough to defeat the invaders. With as many of her people as possible hidden away underground, the Svartalf Queen bowed before the Mad Titan. Amalroos, at the command of his mother and sovereign, became Thanos' general. For several decades following, he stood once again at the head of the Svartalfar forces. But instead of defending their own world, he led them in the defeat and subjugation of other worlds. Constantly throughout all that time he watched and searched for anything -- a force, a weapon, an ally -- anything that would let him turn on Thanos and free his people, but he sought in vain. Even mighty Asgard seemed neither to notice or care. Then, two years ago, Amalroos was assigned a new mission. Not an open military campaign, but an infiltration. He and a half-dozen of his top men were sent to Midgard, a world which had decisively repulsed Thanos' first attempt to invade. They were ordered to insinuate themselves into her defensive forces, studying them and standing ready to undermine and sabotage them when the next attack came. Amalroos did as he was bid, still clinging to the dwindling hope that perhaps this time he would find what he so desperately sought. With two years not being long enough to create and build up an identity good enough to get the trust and access he needed, he stole one. Aubren Stark was a German counter-terrorism wunderkind with a genius for thinking outside of the box, but reclusive enough that he could be replaced without anyone being the wiser. The surname wasn't ideal, leading to Amalroos winding up saying 'no relation' a lot, but that was a minor annoyance. It got his foot in the door with the FBI, which led to his foot in the door with SHIELD, and that was all that mattered.
